Rapid Response Program: How to Make News Without a Press Release

Public relations is based on communicating “news.” This means telling a story about what is new about a company, an individual or an idea.

But sometimes there isn’t anything new to communicate. That doesn’t mean you can’t work with the media to get your strategic messages to important audiences.

Our Rapid Response program is designed to do just that.

With Rapid Response, we actively monitor the media for stories that are related to those of our clients. When we identify a developing trend, we immediately contact relevant reporters to generate interest in our clientÕs strategic messages.

Late last year Rapid Response swung into action for client Nucleus Solutions, which helps Fortune 1000 companies reduce employee absence. A story appeared in a Kentucky paper about Jim Beam’s policy of denying employees adequate break time. This provided an opportunity to position Nucleus Solutions executives as experts on the long-term consequences of this type of policy and its impact on employee absence.

We contacted over 100 reporters on the first the day the Jim Beam story appeared. We obtained interviews with and placements in The Washington Times, the Chicago Tribune, Jacksonville Business Journal and Business Week. In addition, the concentrated effort resulted in executive opinion pieces in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and, just last week, Silicon Valley Business Ink. (Click here to view this article).
